Science Based Carbon Emissions Target

The greatest climate impact is caused by carbon emissions, which is one of the main causes of global warming. We aim to reduce our carbon emissions in our own operations as well as in our supply chain. It means radical changes in the way we operate our business, like switching energy use to renewables, phasing out coal, and using more sustainable raw materials in PUMA products.

PUMA has set a science-based greenhouse gas emission linked to what scientists deem necessary to reach a world in which temperature rise is limited to 1.5 degrees. We commit to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 90% until 2030 from a 2017 baseline year. We also commit to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services and upstream transportation by 33% until 2030 from a 2017 baseline year. We also commit to continue annually sourcing 100% renewable electricity for our own operations through 2030.

Tackling The Target

PUMA’s climate strategy is built around mitigating and adapting to climate change across its entire value chain. The mitigation strategy focuses on reducing GHG emissions through renewable energy adoption, energy efficiency measures, and increasing the use of low-carbon materials where applicable. We engage in stakeholder consultations to help shape our sustainability vision and targets. This approach aims to address climate risks and opportunities in a holistic and proactive manner, while ensuring business resilience.

As a signatory of the UN Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action (UNFCCC), PUMA’s climate targets are approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and are in line with a 1.5°C global scenario.

To better understand the focus of our Climate strategy, we mapped the overall breakdown of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) emissions by different parts of PUMA’s value chain.

To tackle our own operations-related impact, we source 100% renewable electricity across our offices, stores and distribution centers as part of our SBTi-approved targets for Scope 1 and 2. We are also expanding on-site generation of renewable energy, with more than 2 MWp of installed solar capacity at our Herzogenaurach headquarters.

In our upstream value chain (where the majority of our impact is coming from) we work alongside our manufacturing partners to decarbonise by maximising resource efficiency, adopting renewable energy and transitioning to low-carbon materials as part of our SBTi-approved target on Scope 3. For more details, please see our latest annual report.
